We get our fair share of vegan guests at the Flying Pig, so we thought we’d write a blog on the best affordable vegan spots in the Dam to help you guys out. Us vegans love Amsterdam - the city is home to some pretty awesome plant-based restaurants and there are new ones popping up all the time. If you’re looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, here’s where to go…

1 Jacketz

‘Cos what’s better than spuds with hella good vegan toppings? At Jacketz, you can order hearty jacket potatoes piled with yummy vegan toppings such as beetroot, spicy green curry or seasonal greens. A perfect affordable lunch stop just a 3 minute walk from our Downtown hostel.

Filling comfort food that will only set you back €4. The menu is super easy to understand with a little vegan symbol next to the plant-based options. All potatoes here are grown in the Netherlands. You can even choose amazing vegan sauces for your potato.

2 Mr and Mrs Watson

If you were a hardcore cheese fan (before you turned vegan) make sure to eat at Mr and Mrs Watson! Here, they make their very own vegan cheese in-house to go with the inventive dishes. And trust us, it tastes good, which explains why they won the PETA Vegan Food Awards 2017 as Best Dairy Free Cheese in Netherlands. We also recommend trying the vegan cheesecake here!

Our favourite salad bar in Amsterdam. SLA is a cool, contemporary space serving up killer organic salads and smoothies to satisfy you when hunger hits. There are lots of different vegan options here, so you’ll definitely be able to find the perfect salad bowl for you. They’re hearty-sized salads too. With 5 locations around Amsterdam, you’ll never be too far from an SLA. This place also serves up hot vegan soups for the colder months.

4 Beter en Leuk (Better and Nice)

A light, airy health cafe near Oosterpark that won’t let you down for a your vegan fix. Head down for breakfast or brunch and fill yourself up before a day of exploring the city. The delicious vegan options on the menu include hot tasty soups, pancake stacks, sandwiches, even a mighty seaweed burger and some satisfying daily specials like vegan moussaka..

This cosy spot is homely and reasonably priced, too. If you fancy a guilt free sweet treat, we recommend the sweet potato chocolate brownies. The best bit is that there are dairy alternatives available for your coffee such as oat and almond milk.

5 Golden Temple

Get spiced. This hidden gem in the centre of Amsterdam offers an explosion of flavours with it’s all vegetarian Indian menu (with a lot of vegan options too). Think spicy dahl's, fragrant coconut curry and flat Punjabi chapatis. The interior is authentic and colourful, you’ll feel like you’re sitting in a cafe in India. If you want to, you can even eat comfortably on the floor with the low tables and cushions.

We recommend ordering the Flavours of India thali (pictured) which can be made 100% vegan on request.

Everything is organic at Juice Brothers, with fruit and veg shredded up to make amazing healthy juices packed with goodness. They also offer wonderful breakfast bowls including acai bowls, smoothie bowls and other tasty but healthy treats, so we recommend heading here in the morning. We love the choco protein bowl (pictured). With five locations in Amsterdam, this juice bar was started by four friends with a passion for quality cold pressed juice.

Can you believe this is vegan??

You may think the words Vegan and Junk food don’t belong together in the same sentence. But just because you’re vegan, doesn’t mean you can’t indulge. It’s all about the balance. If you’re looking for a melt-in-the-mouth vegan burger, then this is your place. And you’ll thank us when you taste the food. Crazy good. We recommend the Sumo Burger with truffle fries. The loaded fries are also insane. Even the drinks here are vegan so grab a guilt-free beer while you’re here. You won’t regret it. There are two Vegan Junk Food Bars in Amsterdam.

8 Pizza Heart Bar

Catering to vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters, this place keeps everybody happy with its gourmet pizzas. There are 5 delicious vegan pizzas to choose from ranging from 10-15 euros, but it’s worth is for a lovely dinner in a wonderful restaurant bursting with atmosphere. It has a huge terrace to be enjoyed on sunny days, too. It’s a local favourite for a reason.

A health cafe for your quick food-fix on the go. Grab a tasty vegan baguette filled with scrumptious things such as beetroot hummus, pumpkin, seeds and colourful organic fresh veg. The food here is all available to take away so we recommend picking something up that takes your fancy, and enjoy it in the nearby Vondelpark.

You can stop by in the morning for a delicious breakfast bowl, or lunch with hearty menu options such as vegan bolognese, a healthy wrap or a beet burger. Roots is all about healthy meals that are good for the body.

10 Mana Mana

In the heart of the De Pijp district, you’ll find Mana Mana, a restaurant that will make all of your Middle Eastern foodie dreams come true. Authentic dining with a sophisticated edge, Mana Mana is the perfect place to treat yourself to a yummy meal with friends. Think incredible hummus and flatbreads, traditional Lebanese/Israeli dishes and a fantastic cocktail and wine selection. The atmosphere is also great.

Serving up filling vegan food that will ensure you leave with a belly full and a smile on your face, we highly recommend Mana Mana. Spend long, lazy evenings here eating and drinking; if you order the cauliflower it will be the best cauliflower you’ve ever tasted.
