How To Self Care on The Road

Have enough rest

While being on foreign turf, you often want to see and experience the most in a short amount of time, especially if you’re backpacking and heading to the next destination in just a few days. Even though your schedule is cramped, make sure to take enough time to rest by going to bed early, for example. While it varies from person to person how much sleep you need, adults usually need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night to function at their best. So skip that one night of going out for drinks to get enough sleep, which gives you enough energy to explore the next day. That way you’ll get the most out of your holiday, without feeling tired and exhausted all the time.

Practice some yoga

Did you know that yoga originated in India and that it’s over 5,000 years old? If you’re feeling lonely, irritable or stressed, just practice some yoga! The word yoga means union, because while practicing yoga you connect mind, body and soul. It will also help with improving your immune system, while curing your stress levels. You can also do some meditation, if you’re feeling anxious, as this helps calm your thoughts and mind. Just get yourself comfortable, focus on a single point and relax… The benefits of meditating are great! It lowers blood pressure, improves blood circulation, lowers heart rate, makes you feel less anxious and stresses and helps you feel better.

Make time for some relaxation

While going out at night, exploring lots during the day and being active is fun, it can become exhausting at some point. If your body gives signs to slow down, listen to it! Instead of clubbing at night, plan a relaxing night in. Instead of planning lots of activities during the day, take it easy and go for a nice walk in nature first. Other ways for some relaxation and well deserved me-time include going out for a swim, reading a book, getting a massage, watch movies, spend a day away from technology or simply listen to your favourite songs. Just remember to make some time for yourself, it’s totally okay!

Drink enough water and eat healthily

It’s normal to indulge in delicious food on holiday, but make sure to also eat healthy whilst on the road. You know what they say: healthy body equals healthy mind. Of course it can sometimes be hard to invest in healthy food, as fast food is often cheaper than healthy food and your budget might be on the small side. However, don’t forget that it’s important to still eat healthy as it makes you feel more energetic. It’s also extremely important to drink enough water. This is important for everyday, of course, but especially whilst on holiday, since you’ll probably be very active and forgetful of staying hydrated. So this is a reminder: drink enough water!

Be organised but not too organised

Having a planned trip is essential for travelling stress free. There’s nothing worse than not knowing what to do, where to go and how to get anywhere while being in a city you don’t know. Look up things in advance, so that you won’t come for surprises, but don’t over plan! If you plan everything out and have a tight schedule, you will probably stress out. Chill out, relax and enjoy the moments. You don’t need to rush to see and do everything, just go with the flow and do what feels right!

Be amongst nature

Being amongst nature reduces stress, so if you’re feeling tensed, look up the nature! If you’re in a city you can visit parks, gardens or forests for a relaxing stroll. Enjoy the silent moments and beautiful views while walking your stress off. You’ll love it, guaranteed! It’s a great way to reduce stress, anger, tension and anxiety while getting in some cardio.
